About

I’m interested in text and language, both real and symbolic, written, spoken, or coded into the marks of a drawing. I might source the text in my work from literature, poetry, music, or the daily news  but always from something outside myself.  Copying, in my view, removes the sense of authorship from language so the text can be viewed less as content and more as a material, a code, a thing.

I’m interested in the drawings as records: records of an action, of the hand at work, of working through a process. A process which may be more obsessive or compulsive than productive, where there may or may not be some larger meaning once it’s all done.

The repetition both in the process of making the drawings and in the serial form that I often work in is important to me because of the way that I think it serves to both create and reinforce  meaning and allows for a multitude of different readings on the part of the viewer. It’s an obsession that’s less about reaching some end point than it is about engaging in the ritual, in the repetitive behavior, in the compulsion.
